![]() NOTE:
This feature works better in a darkened room and with the volume at a decent level. The film was made in an abandoned maternity hospital in Billinge, Lancashire. I used a sony 8mm VHS camcorder. It was never intended as a short film but more a rolling document of the decay that was so quickly setting in. I think the hospital had been closed for a few years. As with almost all abandoned buildings, the vandals find their way in., as though a sleeping virus waiting to activate upon closure. Sometimes he vandalism can be beneficial, mostly I find it a hindrance and prefer the natural decay. In the case of this hospital the roof began to leak and that accelerated the damp and mould. The most interesting rooms I think were the birth pool rooms and operating theatres. I think to walk in and observe from a completely different perspective is potent. The atmosphere in the hospital was mixed, a lot of joy could be felt though tinged with sadness in some areas. The smell was the typical disinfectant / stale smell. Many relics of the past remained in the way of old medical equipment, texts, slides, furniture etc. This hospital has an online history if you google 'billinge maternity hospital Wigan' Some still images of the hospital are on my photo album - look under 'a selection' folder. My two friends who accompanied me and helped with the stills and filming were Roy Taylor and Anneliese Moorbeek. I thank them for their help. |
